COURSE OVERVIEW

This stimulating and challenging vocational course is for students who intend to study for a degree or follow a career in Sport and Recreation. This course can be taken as an equivalent to two or three AS subjects over a 2 year period.

Units include:

TERM 1

  • Practical Team Sports
  • Fitness Testing for Sport

TERM 2

  • Principles of Anatomy and Physiology
  • The Physiology of Fitness
  • Fitness Training and Programming

TERM 3

  • Sports Coaching
  • Assessing Risks in Sport

Sessions will be a mixture of theory and practical lessons and wherever possible underpinning theory will also be demonstrated in a practical context. Assessment combines observed practical assessments, written reports, case studies, presentations, discussions and work booklets.

FEATURES/BENEFITS

As part of the course, learners will be involved in a number of exciting external visits which include Liverpool John Moores University sports science labs, Anfield stadium, Liverpool FC Academy and St George's Park. It is the college philosophy that learners should be exposed to specialists from the Sport and Active Leisure industry on a regular basis, as a result guest speakers are often present in class to enhance the learning experience.

ENTRY REQUIREMENTS

4 grades A* - C at GCSE plus English minimum grade D and Maths minimum grade E or equivalent qualifications (a Merit or higher at BTEC Level 2 is accepted as part of the 4 A* - C GCSEs).

PROGRESSION OPPORTUNITIES

All learners on the course will be challenged to progress to Year 2 of the programme where learners can top-up to the BTEC National Diploma in Sport, which is the equivalent of two A-Levels.

UCAS EQUIVALENCE

Grades achieved at the end of the course can be converted to UCAS points for university. A Pass is equivalent to 40 UCAS points, A Merit is equal to 80 UCAS points, A Distinction is equal to 120 UCAS points and a Distinction* is equal to 140 UCAS points.
